BITA Crypto Indices Alternative: CCi30 vs BITA Crypto Indices
The CCi30 Cryptocurrency Index is the rules-based alternative to the BITA Crypto Indices. This page reviews the BITA Crypto Indices (BITA Crypto 10, 20, 30, and thematics) under the eight-criterion CCi30 test and compares both indices on universe, weighting, independence, track record, and investability.
What is the alternative to the BITA Crypto Indices?
The CCi30 Cryptocurrency Index replaces the BITA Crypto Indices for investors who need a whole-market benchmark. The CCi30 holds the 30 largest cryptocurrencies by smoothed market capitalization, weights them by the square root of that figure, excludes stablecoins by rule, and has published live values since 1 January 2015.
- 30 constituents
- Square-root weighting
- Stablecoins excluded by rule
- Live since 1 January 2015
- Independent, fully rules-based
What is the BITA Crypto Indices?
BITA, an indexing-infrastructure firm, offers a small crypto family, BITA Crypto 10, 20, and 30 baskets, a “Next 20” mid-cap index, and thematic products (DeFi Select, Metaverse & NFT Select, even a Football Fan Token index).
Where the BITA Crypto Indices falls short statistically
Note the top of BITA’s product ladder: thirty. An independent index engineer, surveying the same market, capped its broadest liquid basket at exactly the constituent count the CCi30 derived from first principles in 2017, corroboration by convergence. But offering 10, 20, and 30 side by side as equivalent products concedes the firm has no theory of the right number, only a menu; and the thematic sprawl (fan tokens as an institutional index category) reveals the business model: indices as SKUs. Cap-weighted construction and a young, thinly-adopted family complete the picture.
